I've consumed two things from the 2025 Hugo Award shortlist recently. They're Quite Different.

The first was The Tainted Cup, by Robert Jackson Bennett. I loved this; it's a crime thriller set in a fantasy world, where The Empire exists to keep its people safe from Leviathans. It has a lot of what you'd expect from the crime genre; whilst a couple of times that meant that I spotted the plot twist or reveal coming, there was still plenty here to keep me guessing (and turning the pages). It also talks about power and money (and how those with both can often keep clear of the law), and perhaps something about how we treat those who aren't the same as ourselves. There are some quite gruesome bits. I have a suspicion that there may be a sequel or two, which I look forward to reading :)

Flow is an animated film without any dialogue. After some apocalypse that has removed all of humanity, a flood comes, and a little cat (our point-of-view character) is nearly swept away. Over time it meets and befriends some other animals, and they have adventures together. This is not a plot-driven film, and I think works better if thought of as a poem in cinematic form. There are moments of very authentical animal behaviour, and also some rather less plausible ones (like animals being able to operate a tiller). I would have liked to have seen this on a big screen, I think.

Crack

A smooth arc
Knows naught
Of becoming;
It must break itself
Into
A whole bird

The song shivers
Like an egg,
Warbling shards
Of something
New

For those who might have been worried, I did indeed pass through Hamburg train station today on my way back home, and I have not been stabbed.

From last Saturday’s Doctor Who but not a spoiler (obviously YouTube comments make contain spoilers)

I’m particularly enjoying speculation in the comments (also not a spoiler) that this is the metaphorical(?) Infinity Bird mentioned in Heaven Sent that sharpens it’s beak on the diamond mountain every hundred years…

Back to three lunatics and a paladin.

Dramatis Personae:

Viepuck, noble-annoying brat with a boss
Izgil, the moonlight guy
Celyn, who thought "well, that happened" about a lot of terrible things honestly
Robin, who needs a vacation

When we left off we had done a bit of cleanup in Peydon and were getting ready to deal with larger events.

So we actually managed to get a night's sleep. )

I was caught unawares in the background of photos taken yesterday after the game, and I was so amused by the exhaustion evident in my position and expression that it had to become an icon.

(I was revived with cake and a drink shortly after this was taken.)

Yesterday Kodiaks B played Solent Valkyries in Gosport. I hired a 9-seater and drove a bunch of the team down and back, and in between played a game, captaining the team for the second time. For some reason I am tired this morning.

Some milestones:

  • It was the first win for Kodiaks B, certainly this season and I think ever.
  • I got my first points for Kodiaks, ever: a goal and an assist, doubling my lifetime points. (1 assist for Women's Blues two seasons ago, 1 assist for Warbirds late last year)
  • That's my first recorded goal ever (I scored my first goal ever in a scrimmage at the end of last year)
  • For extra hilarity I did not actually score this goal, it was an own goal credited to me because I was the last Kodiaks player to touch the puck before the poor Valkyrie kicked it in her own net. A point is a point and I'll claim it. But I have yet to actually score a goal in a formal game.

Also at one point my stick blade got stuck in the boards at the side of the rink when I was digging for a puck. I couldn't get it out, so I went skating hard back to the bench yelling for a change and instead one of my teammates passed me her stick, which I grabbed at speed and went straight back into play. So dramatic! So much fun!

(the ref retrieved my stick and returned it to the bench and I got it back when I changed with my line; it is fine from its adventure)

  1. You're holding a dinner party and can invite three famous people from the past or present; who would they be?

I never understood the appeal of this. I hardly get to see my friends and family. I would rather invite them to dinner than a group of people I don't know. That just sounds exhausting.

  2. You have the opportunity to question someone about something you've always wanted to know and receive a truthful answer; what would your question be?

No no no. In my experience, if someone is holding back on telling you a truth, it's because it is not going to make you feel happy. I'll pass.

  3. If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?

My workload. See answer to Q1.

  4. If you could save other people's lives by completing an act that would lead to your own death, would you do it?

As ever, answers depend on the context. If we are talking about an overstuffed inflatable raft full of vulnerable children floundering in the English Channel, then unequivocally yes. If we are talking about an autocratic dictator and his henchmen, then absolutely not.

  5. Would you commit murder if you knew that you could get away with it?

    No.

In conversation with one of the (not so)Smalls today I realised what a silly expression “mate for life” is - it’s not like the gibbons or swans or whatever are getting put into arranged marriages as soon as they are born!

It also seems to conflate non-monogamy with only short-term relationships/casual recreational sex. Which is not my (human) experience of being polyamorous. Wondering now which, if any, non-human species have a pattern of multiple long term relationships?

I managed to kick my cold enough to play the ice hockey tournament Saturday and Sunday afternoons. One of my teammates gave me a lift from Cambridge rink to Romford each day. It's an easy drive and we get on well, and the tournament itself was great fun. Exhausting, but fun and definitely great for developing and improving play. The other four teams playing were pretty friendly and we made some connections and enthusiasm for playing more games against each other as individual teams.

Unfortunately my ride home got injured in the last few seconds of the last game of the tournament on Sunday evening, a "needs A&E and good drugs" level injury. So I went with him to the local A&E on the grounds they'd probably want a responsible non-drugged adult to get him home, and it'd only be a few hours, right? Ahahaha, it was 16 hours before we got out and it was not a good experience.

I got no sleep at all but at least got plenty of rest sitting on terrible waiting room chairs and plenty of time to stretch and loosen up as my body started to notice all the ways it was sore after playing the tournament. My injured buddy was left in serious pain for over 6 hours, but when he was finally treated he was able to sleep a fair bit in the hospital bed while we waited in assorted places to get assorted scans and tests done that were apparently necessary to discharge him, but not necessary to do with any urgency or information about how long each step would take. Beds in corridors everywhere, a "ward" that was simply a closed off section of corridor where beds were stashed holding people waiting for scans and tests, not a lot of dignity and just no urgency at all about pain management. My buddy was very stoic but shouldn't have had to be.

Also neither of us had showered between "playing lots of ice hockey" and "showing up at A&E", so very sorry to anyone who had to sit too near either of us.

I got a very minimal amount of work done today on my phone from the hospital, but went to bed for a few hours as soon as I finally got home and feel more human now. I will have to figure out whether I take leave for today or make up the effort elsewhere in the week. But that is a problem for tomorrow; tonight I'm hoping to reset my sleep schedule by going to bed on time.
